Prepare for Your New Jersey Non-Resident Carry Permit

Out-of-state residents may apply online for a New Jersey permit to carry. Applicants who are not New Jersey residents or dual residents are automatically assigned to a New Jersey State Police station during the online application process.

Our New Jersey CCW Training is designed for people who live in the DC Metro area but regularly travel to New Jersey. Whether you visit relatives, attend events, travel for work, own property or take frequent East Coast trips, this course provides the New Jersey-specific preparation required before applying.

After successfully completing New Jersey CCW Training, you will receive a completed SP-182 Permit to Carry Safe Handling and Proficiency Certification and a copy of the instructor’s current certification for upload with your application.

A permit is issued only by the State of New Jersey. Completing New Jersey CCW Training does not guarantee approval, but it helps ensure that you have completed the training portion and received the supporting documents required for your application.

What Is Included in the NJ CCARE Qualification?

New Jersey CCW Training includes the Civilian Carry Assessment and Range Evaluation, commonly known as the NJ CCARE qualification. The current protocol requires 50 scored rounds on an FBI-type Q target from 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards. Students must place at least 40 of 50 rounds inside the target border to earn the required 80% passing score.

The New Jersey CCW Training course also evaluates safe firearm handling, loading, unloading, concealed draw, reloading, marksmanship and safe re-holstering. Students must demonstrate safe handling throughout the course, not simply earn the required score.

Your New Jersey CCW Training also includes in-person instruction covering New Jersey use-of-force principles for private citizens. Students should already be comfortable operating their handgun and drawing safely from a secured concealed-carry holster. Students who need additional preparation may schedule private pistol coaching before attempting the qualification.

Your training includes:

  • New Jersey use-of-force instruction
  • Firearm safe-handling review
  • NJ CCARE live-fire qualification
  • 50-round scored course of fire
  • Professional instructor supervision
  • Completed SP-182 after successful completion
  • Copy of the instructor certification
  • Application-process guidance
