Why train for a New Jersey permit?
A permit from another state isn’t the same thing.
You might already have a Virginia, Maryland, DC or multistate carry permit. That does not automatically authorize concealed carry in New Jersey. New Jersey maintains its own permit-to-carry process and requires approved state-specific training.

The qualification, explained simply
What is the New Jersey CCARE test?
CCARE stands for Civilian Carry Assessment and Range Evaluation. Think of it as a supervised shooting assessment that checks both accuracy and safe gun handling. The official course uses an FBI-type Q target.

Where training happens
New Jersey training requirements. Northern Virginia convenience.
Designed for eligible students from Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC, our New Jersey CCW instruction is scheduled at professional training facilities in the Fairfax / Lorton area as available.
You won’t need to mistake our office for a shooting range. Once your date is confirmed, we’ll provide the correct classroom and live-fire venue details.
Important: The office at 11166 Fairfax Boulevard, Suite 500 is for meetings by appointment. It is not the live-fire course location. Exact range location is supplied with your training confirmation.

Can Virginia, Maryland or Washington, DC residents apply for a New Jersey permit to carry?
Yes. New Jersey provides an out-of-state application process. Nonresidents who are not dual residents generally have their online application assigned to a New Jersey State Police station. Eligibility and approval are determined by New Jersey, not by Trouble Defense.
Will my Virginia, Maryland or DC permit let me carry in New Jersey?
No automatic reciprocity. A permit issued by another state is not a substitute for a New Jersey permit to carry, and out-of-state training does not replace New Jersey-specific training requirements.
Is this an online course?
No. New Jersey CCARE includes in-person safe-handling instruction and a supervised live-fire assessment. This is in-person training in Northern Virginia, not an online-only certificate.
What is CCARE, and what score must I earn?
CCARE means Civilian Carry Assessment and Range Evaluation. The assessment includes 50 scored rounds from 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards on an FBI-type Q target. You need 40 qualifying hits out of 50 (80%), while demonstrating safe handling, drawing and re-holstering.
How much does Trouble Defense charge?
The advertised New Jersey CCW Training price is $300.00. State application and fingerprinting fees are separate. Please ask us whether ammunition, handgun rental, targets and range fees will add to your total before confirming your date.
Is the class four hours or six hours long?
The current Trouble Defense course listing describes a 4-hour format with a 2-hour range portion. Confirm the exact classroom and live-fire schedule with our team when you request your training date.
Where does the training take place?
Training is arranged at our Fairfax, Virginia and Lorton, Virginia training locations, based on available classroom and live-fire facilities. The Fairfax Boulevard office is for meetings by appointment and is not the advertised range training address. Your confirmation will include the exact venue.
What should I bring?
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, your properly transported handgun, a secure concealed-carry holster appropriate for range use, at least 100 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection. Contact us before class if you need equipment or rental options.
Is this suitable for someone who has never fired a handgun?
CCARE is an assessment, not a beginner introduction. You must already be comfortable with safe handling, loading, unloading and secure holster use. We recommend private pistol preparation if you are brand new or unsure.
What documents do I receive after I pass?
After successful completion, you will receive a completed New Jersey SP-182 safe-handling and proficiency certification and a copy of your instructor’s qualifying certification for the New Jersey online application.
Do I need a New Jersey firearm purchaser ID card?
New Jersey’s published instructions for out-of-state applicants state that an FPIC is not required simply to apply for a New Jersey permit to carry. Follow the current online state instructions for your circumstances.
Does training guarantee the permit? How long does the permit last?
No. Training does not guarantee approval. The State of New Jersey makes licensing decisions, and permits are generally valid for two years. Always consult the latest NJSP instructions for renewals, training validity and restricted locations.
