  1. Choose your training dates

    Review the Maryland class calendar. Confirm the full session schedule, meeting locations, equipment, and total range charges before completing registration.

  2. Complete the required training

    Attend the in-person course and successfully complete live-fire qualification. Keep your signed MSP 29-14 qualification documentation.

  3. Prepare your application

    Arrange Maryland-approved LiveScan fingerprints and a passport-style color photo. Submit the required documents and fee through the MSP Licensing Portal.

  4. Wait for the state’s decision

    MSP makes the permit decision. Completing a class or submitting an application does not authorize carrying. Receive your approval and permit card first.

Is this a Maryland concealed carry class?
Yes. This is training for the Maryland Wear and Carry Permit, often called a Maryland CCW or concealed carry permit. Classes meet in Virginia. A Maryland permit is a separate state authorization, not a nationwide carry license.
How long is Maryland Wear and Carry training?
Nonexempt initial applicants need at least 16 hours of in-person instruction. Renewal training is eight hours in person. This page’s $325 registration is for the initial course. Confirm every required class and range appointment when booking.
What does the $325 price include?
Tuition covers the course instruction, supervised live-fire qualification, and completion documentation after successful training. Range facility fees, ammunition, fingerprints, and the state application fee are separate. Use the cost breakdown and confirm equipment arrangements with us.
Where are the classroom and range sessions?
The course lists Fairfax, Virginia classroom instruction and range sessions in Fairfax or Lorton, Virginia. Follow the exact address in your confirmation. We serve Maryland students, but these are Virginia training locations.
Can I take the class without owning a handgun?
Yes. You do not need to own a handgun to get started. Contact us before booking to confirm firearm-use arrangements and any costs for your live-fire session. Bring a personal firearm only under the instructions provided for your scheduled training.
How much ammunition should I bring?
Confirm the required quantity for all scheduled sessions and the correct caliber with your instructor. Ammunition is student-provided or purchased separately. Use factory-manufactured ammunition that meets the range’s rules; follow your class confirmation for what to bring.
Is an HQL the same as a Wear and Carry Permit?
No. An HQL generally concerns purchasing, renting, or receiving a handgun; it does not authorize public carry. Our separate Maryland HQL class is four hours. An HQL is not required just to possess a handgun you already legally own.
Do I need a separate HQL course after Wear and Carry?
Do not automatically book both courses. Valid Maryland Wear and Carry permit holders can use the state’s HQL Permit Exempt application route. Review the official HQL instructions for your situation; the HQL is not automatically issued just because you attended this class.
Can beginners and non-Maryland residents attend?
Yes, beginners and out-of-state applicants are welcome. No prior shooting experience is required for this class. Permit eligibility is a separate state decision. Review MSP eligibility requirements before enrolling.
Are fingerprints included?
No. Arrange fingerprints separately with a Maryland-approved LiveScan provider. Use the official fingerprinting information to find a provider and confirm its fee.
What if I need renewal training or have an exemption?
Contact us before booking the initial course. Renewal applicants generally need an eight-hour course unless exempt. MSP recommends beginning renewal 90 days before expiration. An expired permit may require the initial application process. Ask MSP to confirm any exemption that applies to you.
Does passing the class guarantee my permit?
No. Trouble Defense provides training; Maryland State Police reviews and decides permit applications. Training completion is not a permit. Review current carry-location restrictions even after approval.
