DMV concealed carry training.

One class for DC, Maryland & Virginia.

Your week might start in Arlington, take you into the District and end in Silver Spring.

That week is the reason DMV concealed carry training is framed as one class for three jurisdictions. A single week can cross several borders, and a DMV concealed carry training route that follows that week, rather than stopping at one border, matches the way people actually travel through the region.

Learn what changes at each border and prepare for three separate concealed carry permit applications in one coordinated course.

What changes when you cross the river?

Imagine driving from Alexandria to National Harbor for dinner. You cross the Wilson Bridge without stopping at a checkpoint. If you carry on a Virginia permit alone, Maryland does not recognize it. Make your next trip into DC and you face a different licensing process again.

That contrast is the point of the comparison. A route that feels ordinary on the road can still cross into a different set of rules, and the permit that works on one side of a bridge may not work on the other. Thinking in terms of destination, rather than in terms of a single permit, helps you see why DMV concealed carry training sets out three separate routes side by side. Each route has its own office, its own paperwork, and its own next step after class, even when the classroom experience is shared.

DC Concealed Carry License

When your destination is in the District, a Virginia or Maryland permit alone does not authorize concealed carry. DC also requires you to register the pistol you intend to carry.

That registration step is part of what makes the DC route in DMV concealed carry training distinct. It is not only a license to carry, but also a process for the pistol itself, so the application and the registration are considered together when you plan your DC route.

After class Follow the Metropolitan Police Department’s licensing and firearm registration process.

Maryland Wear and Carry Permit

If you live in Virginia and visit family in Prince George’s County, your Virginia permit stops helping at the state line. Maryland requires its own Wear and Carry Permit for ordinary concealed carry.

The state-line example shows why a home-state permit cannot be assumed to travel with you. Crossing into Maryland changes the permit that applies, even when the trip itself is familiar and routine.

After class Use the Maryland State Police Licensing Portal and its checklist for training records and fingerprints.

Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit

Virginia recognizes qualifying out-of-state permits under specific conditions. If you want a Virginia-issued permit, your application goes to a different office depending on where you live.

That distinction between recognition and a Virginia-issued permit is important to keep clear. One concerns permits from elsewhere, and the other concerns applying for a Virginia permit in the first place, with the office depending on where you live.

After class Virginia residents apply through their local circuit court. Nonresidents apply through Virginia State Police.

02 Your class itinerary

From the classroom
to the application.

You learn the shared fundamentals once.

Learning the fundamentals once, and then seeing how they apply in each jurisdiction, is the reason DMV concealed carry training shares its itinerary at the start. It keeps the classroom work connected, while still leaving room for the decisions, range work, and paperwork that are specific to DC, Maryland, and Virginia, rather than treating each application as a separate course from the beginning.

Your instructors then walk you through the decisions, range qualifications and paperwork that differ across the DMV.

  1. Classroom

    Work through the everyday decisions.

Discuss safe handling and storage, conflict avoidance, use-of-force laws, and restricted places.

Those everyday decisions are where DMV concealed carry training becomes practical. Discussing handling, storage, avoidance, and the rules for restricted places together helps you see how the same principles apply in different settings, and questions about everyday carry are part of that discussion, not an interruption to it.

Bring a question about your own commute or a place you visit regularly.

  2. Supervised range

    Complete the live-fire qualifications.

Your instructor explains the range procedures and qualification requirements before you begin.

Knowing the procedures and requirements before you begin also makes DMV concealed carry training easier to follow. When the expectations are clear at the start, you can focus on the supervised work itself, and first-time shooters can use the support that is described for them.

First-time shooters are welcome. Plan for every required range date.

  3. After training

    Leave with your training records.

After successful completion, you receive your certificate and applicable qualification record.

That record is the link between DMV concealed carry training and application. It shows what you completed, and it is the document you will refer to when you submit a separate application for each permit you want, with each issuing authority deciding on its own application.

Submit a separate application for each permit you want. Each issuing authority decides whether to approve it.

Plan your class dates and costs.

Tuition covers instruction, supervised live-fire training and completion records.

That coverage is what the ticket is summarising for DMV concealed carry training: instruction, supervised range work, and the records that follow, in one package price. Seeing those three elements together helps you compare the package with the separate items that are budgeted for apart from it.

The DMV booking listing includes firearm use, a target, and eye and ear protection.

Budget separately for 100 rounds of factory ammunition, range fees, government application fees, and any required fingerprinting

Budgeting for those items separately also keeps the DMV concealed carry training package price clear. When ammunition, range fees, application fees, and fingerprinting are listed apart from tuition, you can see what is included and what is not, without mixing the two together.

Where you’ll train

Fairfax and Lorton both host classroom and range instruction.

Having two locations for DMV concealed carry training also means your confirmation matters. It tells you where each part of the training will take place, so you can plan travel to Fairfax or to Lorton for the sessions that are held there, rather than assuming every session is at the same place.

Your registration confirmation tells you where to report for each session.

Which dates to reserve

This package spans multiple sessions.

Confirming every date before paying is therefore part of choosing DMV concealed carry training, not an extra step after it. Because the package spans multiple sessions, a date that works for the classroom may not work for a range session, and checking all of them together avoids a gap in the route.

Before paying, confirm every classroom and range date. If you’re applying in Maryland for the first time, ask which sessions satisfy its 16-hour in-person requirement.

04 Student questions

Before your
first class.

Have a permit already, or only need one jurisdiction? Start here.

Can I carry in all three places as soon as class ends?

No. Your certificate shows you completed training.

That distinction between a certificate and a permit is central to DMV concealed carry training. A certificate shows training is complete, while a permit is what authorizes carrying in a particular jurisdiction, so the two should not be confused when you plan where you will carry.

Before carrying, you need a permit valid in the jurisdiction you’re entering and must follow its restrictions. DC and Maryland each issue their own credentials. Virginia also recognizes certain permits under its rules. Check Virginia’s recognition conditions ↗

I only want one permit. Which class should I book?

Choose the individual class if you only need training for one application.

Choosing between an individual class and the combined DMV concealed carry training package therefore depends on how many applications you plan to make. An individual class fits a single application, while the combined package fits students who want training for several jurisdictions, and the choice can be made with that difference in view.

The combined package is for students who want training for several jurisdictions.

Do I need to own a handgun or have range experience?

Beginners are welcome, and you don’t need a handgun for classroom instruction. The package includes use of a firearm for training.

That inclusion is useful for beginners in DMV concealed carry training, because it means classroom instruction does not depend on owning equipment in advance. If you plan to use your own firearm, or have questions about ammunition, checking before buying supplies keeps the range days consistent with what the package already provides.

If you plan to use your own or have questions about ammunition, call us before buying supplies.

Is a Maryland HQL the permit this course prepares me for?

The Maryland portion prepares you for the Wear and Carry Permit.

Keeping those two Maryland documents distinct is the point of DMV concealed carry training. One is the permit that the Maryland portion prepares you for, and the other generally concerns acquiring a handgun, so they should not be treated as interchangeable when you plan your application.

A Handgun Qualification License generally concerns acquiring a handgun and does not grant carry authority. Read the Maryland HQL guide ↗

How do I check the training requirements before booking?

For initial DC applicants, MPD generally requires 16 hours of instruction and two hours on the range.

Checking those requirements before booking DMV concealed carry training is therefore a practical first step. The three statements together show how DC, Maryland, and Virginia each describe their training, and the links that follow them let you read each source directly, rather than relying on a summary alone.

Maryland law specifies at least 16 hours in person for nonexempt initial applicants. Virginia accepts qualifying in-person instruction as one way to show handgun competency.
