July 11, 2026I’m very late posting this review, but I’ve taken 2 classes with Trouble Defense and I cannot recommend them enough!... read more I took the Beginner Firearms class in January (included a general overview on pistols, a cleaning class, and a 1 hour range time with an instructor). After this I felt comfortable enough to actually purchase a firearm and be confident in my ability to use and maintain it. I ended up taking the CCW class as well in April, and it was just as informative. As a woman, it can feel very intimidating trying to get into firearms, but Sheena and Lacey were incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and I’m so grateful to them and Trouble Defense for creating such a safe and inclusive environment to learn. If you’re looking for any kind of firearms training in the DMV, I highly recommend going to Trouble Defense!

Prepare for Your New Jersey Non-Resident Carry Permit
Out-of-state residents may apply online for a New Jersey permit to carry. Applicants who are not New Jersey residents or dual residents are automatically assigned to a New Jersey State Police station during the online application process.
Our New Jersey CCW Training is designed for people who live in the DC Metro area but regularly travel to New Jersey. Whether you visit relatives, attend events, travel for work, own property or take frequent East Coast trips, this course provides the New Jersey-specific preparation required before applying.
After successfully completing New Jersey CCW Training, you will receive a completed SP-182 Permit to Carry Safe Handling and Proficiency Certification and a copy of the instructor’s current certification for upload with your application.
A permit is issued only by the State of New Jersey. Completing New Jersey CCW Training does not guarantee approval, but it helps ensure that you have completed the training portion and received the supporting documents required for your application.
What Is Included in the NJ CCARE Qualification?
New Jersey CCW Training includes the Civilian Carry Assessment and Range Evaluation, commonly known as the NJ CCARE qualification. The current protocol requires 50 scored rounds on an FBI-type Q target from 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards. Students must place at least 40 of 50 rounds inside the target border to earn the required 80% passing score.
The New Jersey CCW Training course also evaluates safe firearm handling, loading, unloading, concealed draw, reloading, marksmanship and safe re-holstering. Students must demonstrate safe handling throughout the course, not simply earn the required score.
Your New Jersey CCW Training also includes in-person instruction covering New Jersey use-of-force principles for private citizens. Students should already be comfortable operating their handgun and drawing safely from a secured concealed-carry holster. Students who need additional preparation may schedule private pistol coaching before attempting the qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – New Jersey CCW Training for DC Metro Residents
Yes. New Jersey accepts applications from out-of-state residents. Applicants who are not New Jersey residents or dual residents apply online and are assigned to a New Jersey State Police station.
No. New Jersey states that an out-of-state permit or training completed for another jurisdiction does not replace its state-specific training requirements.
Applicants must successfully complete the NJ CCARE qualification. The course includes 50 scored rounds fired from 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards on an FBI-type Q target. A minimum score of 80% is required.
The instruction is professional and supportive, but the qualification is not a basic first-time shooting class. Students must safely draw from a concealed holster, load, unload, reload, fire accurately and re-holster. Private preparation is available for students who need additional practice.

Applicants who have never been fingerprinted for a New Jersey firearms application are generally required to complete fingerprinting. Applicants who already have a New Jersey SBI number generally do not need to be fingerprinted again unless there is an unresolved fingerprint issue.
ANo. New Jersey’s current instructions state that an out-of-state applicant does not need to obtain a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card before applying for a New Jersey permit to carry.
A New Jersey permit to carry is generally valid for two years. Current renewal and training-document requirements are controlled by the New Jersey State Police instructions in effect when you apply.
No. New Jersey CCW Training satisfies the training and qualification portion only. The assigned New Jersey licensing authority makes the final decision after reviewing the full application and background investigation.
