Your first step, made clear

A Virginia concealed carry class that starts with you.

You don’t need to own a handgun or know all the terminology to get started. Bring your questions and learn in a setting built around responsible ownership.

Our Virginia concealed carry class provides in-person instruction for students preparing to apply for a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit, often called a CHP or Virginia CCW permit. The standard class focuses on safety, legal responsibilities, and the knowledge you need for your next step.

  • Approximately three hours of instructor-led classroom learning.
  • Safety-focused explanations with time to ask questions.
  • Training certificate after successful class completion.
  • Optional supervised range instruction for students who want additional practice.
Your certificate documents training. It is not your permit. Virginia residents apply through the appropriate circuit court; nonresidents use the Virginia State Police process.

Training, then your application

Your Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit.
Four clear steps.

  1. Reserve your class

Choose your Virginia concealed carry class date. Check the location and decide whether you want optional range instruction.

  2. Attend in person

Take part in the approximately three-hour class. Ask questions and complete the instructor’s requirements. The standard classroom does not require you to bring a firearm.

  3. Keep your certificate

After successfully completing your Virginia CCW training, keep a copy of your certificate with your application records. The certificate documents your training; it does not authorize concealed carry.

  4. Apply through the right authority

Virginia residents use their local circuit court. Nonresidents apply through Virginia State Police. Follow the issuing authority’s current documentation, fee, and submission instructions.

Already trained or renewing? Virginia recognizes several forms of competency evidence, including qualifying military service and certain prior permits. Proof of demonstrated competency does not expire under current law. Review your documents with the issuing authority before paying for another course.

Answers before you enroll

Virginia concealed carry
class questions.

Is a Virginia CCW permit the same as a CHP?
Yes. Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) is the official permit name; “Virginia CCW permit” is a common informal term for it. Our Virginia concealed carry class provides in-person training documentation after successful completion. You then apply separately through the appropriate issuing authority.
How long is the Virginia concealed carry class?
Our standard Virginia class is approximately three hours of in-person classroom instruction. That is our course duration, not a statewide three-hour minimum. Any optional range appointment is additional to classroom time.
How much does the Virginia concealed carry class cost?
The standard class is $100 per student. Optional range instruction is an additional $30 plus facility admission; the current Fairfax booking lists a $32 range fee. Government permit charges are separate. See the pricing breakdown.
Does your Virginia CCW training include range practice?
Live-fire range instruction is optional for this standard classroom course. You can choose additional supervised practice. The separate Fast-Track program includes a required in-person range component, so its format is different.
Do I need to own or bring a firearm?
No firearm is needed for the classroom. If you add range instruction, confirm the firearm, ammunition, eye and ear protection, and any personal-equipment instructions with our team. Do not bring a firearm into class unless specifically directed by the instructor.
Where is the class held?
The current standard booking lists the NRA Range at 11250 Waples Mill Road in Fairfax. Trouble Defense also uses Sharpshooters in Lorton; ask about availability before booking. Follow the address on your confirmation rather than assuming every session meets at the same venue.
When will I receive my training certificate?
Successful students in the standard course receive their certificate after class. It supports a permit application and is not permission to carry. Fast-Track has its own completion and certificate timeline on its program page.
Can I complete Virginia CCW training entirely online?
No. The standard course is in person. If you prefer online preparation, explore our Fast-Track option, which still requires successful in-person instruction before a certificate is issued. An online-only certificate does not meet the current Virginia competency requirement.
Where do residents apply for a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit?
Residents apply to the circuit court for their county or city. The combined statutory application and processing charges are capped at $50; your locality may charge less. Check the court’s current instructions and any incidental payment or mailing costs. Training tuition is separate.
Can a Maryland or DC resident apply for a Virginia permit?
Nonresidents aged 21 or older may apply through Virginia State Police, subject to eligibility. That process has separate fingerprint, photo, documentation, and fee requirements. Read the official nonresident instructions. A Virginia permit does not automatically authorize carry in your home jurisdiction.
What is the CHP age requirement and permit timeline?
Applicants must generally be at least 21 and meet the applicable eligibility requirements. Virginia’s resident process provides a 45-day decision period for a complete application unless the applicant is disqualified. Ask your circuit court about your application; the class does not guarantee a permit or an issue date.
Does my training certificate expire? Do I need a CHP renewal class?
Current Virginia law says proof of demonstrated handgun competency does not expire. A qualifying prior permit or other accepted evidence may satisfy the competency requirement. Check your documents and renewal instructions before paying for new training. Refresher instruction remains an option if you want it.
Does a Virginia CCW permit cover Maryland or DC?
No. Do not assume that a Virginia permit authorizes carry in another jurisdiction. Recognition and restrictions vary. Check current official rules for each destination and explore our DMV training options if you need additional permit training.
Are beginners welcome, and can I discuss accommodations?
Yes. No previous firearm experience is required for the standard class. Contact us before booking to discuss your questions, accessibility needs, group plans, or preferred location. We can explain available arrangements and help you choose an appropriate training option.
