Make room for every step

A little planning makes renewal easier.

Your training and permit application are separate steps. Give yourself time to complete both.

STEP 01

Check your date.

Read the expiration date on your permit. MSP recommends starting renewal 90 days before expiration.

STEP 02

Confirm your class.

Ask about renewal dates, tuition, your instructor and the complete classroom and range schedule.

STEP 03

Complete training.

Finish the required instruction and qualification. Keep your completed, signed MSP 29-14 score sheet.

STEP 04

Apply through MSP.

Submit the required documents and state fee through the Maryland Licensing Portal. Monitor your application.

Near expiration, already expired, or dealing with an incomplete application? Confirm your permit status and next steps with Maryland State Police before relying on a class booking.

How long is Maryland renewal training?

Maryland requires eight hours of in-person instruction for renewal applicants who are not exempt. Confirm how your classroom and range components are scheduled before booking.

Can I complete the required class entirely online?

No. Maryland law specifies in-person renewal instruction and a live-fire qualification component.

Do I need to complete live-fire qualification again?

The required renewal course includes supervised live-fire qualification. Ask about equipment, range arrangements and the complete schedule when you contact us.

What if my permit has already expired?

MSP directs expired-permit holders to the new-application process, including initial training and new fingerprints. Confirm your circumstances with MSP before choosing a class.

Do I need new fingerprints for a renewal?

MSP says routine renewal applications do not require new LiveScan fingerprints. Expired-permit applications follow a different process.

How much does the renewal class cost?

Contact Trouble Defense for current renewal tuition and any additional range, equipment or ammunition costs. The state application fee is separate.

Do I need my own firearm or equipment?

Tell us what equipment you have and what you may need for the qualification. Confirm availability, preparation instructions and any associated charges before registering.

Could I qualify for a training exemption?

Exemptions may apply. Ask MSP to confirm your eligibility and supporting documentation before paying for a course. A previous class should not be treated as an automatic exemption.

Does completing the class renew my permit?

No. Training completion and the permit decision are separate. You must submit your application to Maryland State Police, which reviews and decides it.
