This is a course guide, not an eligibility decision. MPD determines DC licensing eligibility and any training credit or exemption.
The standard initial training path includes 16 hours of classroom instruction and two hours of range training. Select the DC appointment and review every required session before payment.
Your DC concealed carry class follows the standard initial requirement: 16 hours of firearms instruction plus two hours of range training with an MPD-certified instructor. Both parts must be completed unless applicable training credit is granted.
Understand District and federal firearm laws, self-defense law, restricted places and the responsibilities attached to a concealed carry license.
Study firearm safety, safe storage, handgun operation and responsible practices for your household and your training sessions.
Discuss situational awareness, de-escalation and decision-making. A license carries responsibilities that go well beyond completing paperwork.
Complete the required live-fire training and qualification with your instructor. Successful completion is required for training documentation.
Tell us about your experience and any equipment or accessibility needs before class. Review the full schedule, including your range sessions, rather than relying on the first appointment block alone.

DC CCW is common shorthand for concealed carry; MPD calls the District’s permit a Concealed Carry License (CCL). Successful completion of your DC concealed carry class provides training documentation. MPD reviews your application and decides whether to issue the license.
Applicants must be at least 21 and meet MPD’s legal and suitability requirements. MPD says CCL applicants must own or be in the process of purchasing a handgun. Firearm registration and CCL applications can be handled together.
Review MPD eligibility ↗Follow the standard 16-hour course plus two-hour range path unless MPD grants applicable credit. Keep your completion documents. No prior-training exemption removes the DC-law training requirement.
View Trouble Defense DC dates ↗Use the current MPD forms or Firearms Portal. Gather the required identification, two proofs of residency, training certificate and registration documents that apply to your situation.
Follow the current application instructions ↗MPD’s process includes an in-person visit for fingerprinting and photography. Bring the required documents and payment arrangements. Do not bring a firearm to the MPD appointment.
Open the MPD Firearms Portal ↗Use the expiration date on your actual license. MPD says DC concealed carry licenses are valid for two years and recommends submitting renewals 45 days before expiration.
Contact Trouble Defense for the renewal course that fits your situation, its price and available dates. Avoid booking the full initial course simply because it is the first appointment you see.
A DC license does not authorize carry everywhere in the District. MPD lists restrictions affecting government buildings, schools, healthcare locations, Metro and other places. Review the current rules before carrying.
A personal CCL is also separate from any credential or authority required for armed security employment.
