At Trouble Defense LLC, we train everyone from first-time gun owners to seasoned shooters, and these tips are the foundation of safe, effective handgun use.
What sets us apart? We don’t throw you into a class and expect you to figure it out. Our instructors—many of them NRA-certified women with real-world experience—break down everything in a way that’s clear, judgment-free, and focused on building your confidence. From your grip to your stance, your sight alignment to your trigger press, we make sure you’re doing more than just hitting the target—you’re learning how to shoot smart, safe, and with complete control.
We train at local ranges throughout the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. And even though we’re not a range ourselves, we give you the type of training that most people wish they got when they first picked up a gun. Whether you’re preparing to carry concealed in Virginia, going through the 16-hour Maryland Wear and Carry course, or just trying to improve your accuracy before hitting a Washington D.C. shooting range, our mission is to help you get there with real results.
Firearm ownership is a responsibility—not just a right. That’s why we focus on the full picture: safe handling, legal education, situational awareness, and hands-on shooting skills. We train individuals, couples, families, and even offer specialized women-only courses taught by women. So if you’re looking for pistol training that actually sticks, this is it.
Let’s break down some essential pistol shooting tips every gun owner should know—whether you’re brand new or been shooting for years. These aren’t just tips to look good at the range… these are the fundamentals that could save your life.
Master the Fundamentals of Grip

A proper grip is the cornerstone of pistol accuracy and recoil control.
- Use a firm, two-handed grip
- Keep your thumbs aligned forward
- Avoid “cup and saucer” or limp grips
- The web of your hand should be high on the backstrap.
Build a Strong, Balanced Stance

You can’t shoot well if your foundation is weak.
- Try the Isosceles stance (arms straight out) for stability
- Keep your feet shoulder-width apart
- Lean slightly forward—not back
Focus on Trigger Control

Jerking the trigger throws off your shot every time.
- Apply slow, even pressure
- Use the pad of your index finger, not the joint
- Practice dry fire drills at home to build muscle memory

Learn Sight Alignment and Sight Picture
Accuracy comes from aligning your sights, not just pointing and shooting.
- Focus on the front sight
- Keep the front and rear sights level
- The target should be slightly blurry; the front sight should be sharp
Breathe and Follow Through
Many beginners rush the shot or hold their breath too long.
- Take a breath, exhale slightly, then fire
- After shooting, keep aiming for a second to follow through
